Prepping for pavement

At Leritz & Busy Bee, we provide specialized asphalt solutions to the commercial industry. Our paving process is prompt and cost-efficient, thus saving you time and money. How have we been able to do this, you ask? Two words: surface prep.

Once you have chosen an asphalt application it is time to begin phase one of the pre-pavement process: surface preparation. If the area is new, it is important that we dig a space deep enough to accommodate not only the asphalt, but the gravel base as well.

Speaking of the gravel base, it is vital that your base is the proper thickness. Asphalt gains strength from the rock base beneath. Determining the proper rock thickness will give your area a solid foundation and increase the overall lifespan of your pavement. A minimum of 6” of rock is recommended; however increasing your rock base will only make your pavement more durable. Also, it is very important that we compact the rock before we begin paving. Proper compaction equipment is essential, which will help prevent early settling and cracking of your pavement.

Also, please be vigilant in ensuring your contractor is applying a gravel base. Many “fly by night” contractors will try to cut corners in effort to save money, but a gravel base can simply not be forgotten.
